World Mental Health Day takes place every year on 10 October and is a chance to talk openly about mental health and remind ourselves of the importance of looking after our emotional wellbeing.
Mental health is just as important as physical health. It can affect how we think, feel and cope with everyday life. We all have good days and difficult days, and sometimes we may need a little extra support.
At Fuchsia Homecare, we understand how important wellbeing is for our customers, care workers, families and the wider community. Here are some simple ways to look after your mental health and support those around you.
Mental health is something we all have, and it can change throughout our lives. Things such as stress, loneliness, changes in health, bereavement or major life changes can sometimes affect how we feel.
For older people, spending more time at home, changes in independence or having less contact with friends and family can sometimes lead to feelings of loneliness or isolation.
For care workers, supporting others can also be rewarding while bringing its own challenges. Taking time to look after your own wellbeing is important too.
Keeping in touch with the people around you can make a real difference.
Pick up the phone and have a chat with a friend or family member, arrange a cup of tea together, or get involved in a local group or activity.
You don’t always need to have a big conversation. Sometimes, simply having someone to talk to can help you feel less alone.
Physical activity can be good for both your body and your mind.
You don’t need to do anything complicated. A short walk, some gentle stretching, gardening or simply getting outside for some fresh air can all be positive ways to add movement to your day.
If you can, try to make a little time for activity each day.
Life can get busy, so it’s important to make time for activities that make you feel good.
You might enjoy reading, gardening, baking, listening to music, doing a crossword, watching your favourite programme or spending time with a pet.
Even a few minutes doing something you enjoy can give you a welcome break and lift your mood.
Our physical and mental wellbeing are closely connected.
Eating regular, nutritious meals, getting enough rest, staying hydrated and keeping active can all support your overall wellbeing.
A good routine can also help. Having regular mealtimes, getting up at a similar time each day and making space for activities you enjoy can give your day structure.
When life feels busy or stressful, taking a few quiet moments for yourself can help.
Try taking some slow, deep breaths, sitting somewhere peaceful, listening to calming music or simply stepping away from what you’re doing for a few minutes.
You don’t have to spend a long time doing this. Even a short break can help you reset.
You don’t have to deal with difficult feelings on your own.
If you’re struggling, talk to someone you trust. This could be a family member, friend, care worker, GP or another professional.
Talking about how you feel can sometimes be the first step towards getting the support you need.
Sometimes, the people around us may be going through a difficult time without saying so.
If you notice that someone seems quieter than usual, is withdrawing from activities or simply doesn’t seem like themselves, checking in with them can mean a lot.
A simple “How are you doing?” can open the door to a conversation.
You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes, listening and letting someone know that you are there can be enough.
At Fuchsia Homecare, we believe that supporting someone’s wellbeing is about more than helping with day-to-day tasks. It’s also about companionship, conversation, independence and helping people feel comfortable in their own homes.
Our care workers see the importance of these small moments every day — whether that’s having a chat over a cup of tea, helping someone get out for some fresh air or simply being there to listen.
Looking after your mental health doesn’t have to mean making big changes. Small, everyday things can make a difference.
Stay connected. Keep moving. Make time for things you enjoy. Talk about how you feel. And remember that asking for support is nothing to be ashamed of. 💜
This World Mental Health Day, let’s take a moment to check in with ourselves and the people around us. Sometimes, a simple conversation can mean more than we realise.
