How to Fund Your Care

Navigating the costs of home care can be overwhelming, but understanding the available funding options can make the process more manageable. Whether you're seeking short-term assistance or long-term support, there are several avenues to explore:
Home care

Local Authority Funding (Social Care Support)

If you need help with care and support at home, your local council may be able to contribute towards the cost. In England, your savings and other financial circumstances will be considered as part of a financial assessment.
  • Needs Assessment – Request a free care needs assessment from your local council to find out what support you may need.
  • Financial Assessment – If your assessment shows that you have eligible care needs, the council will carry out a financial assessment to work out whether you qualify for help with the cost.
  • Direct Payments – If you are eligible for council funding, you may be able to receive a direct payment to arrange your own care and support with a provider such as Fuchsia Homecare.
Tip: Having more than £23,250 in savings does not stop you from requesting a needs assessment. You may still be entitled to an assessment and information about your care options, although you will usually need to pay for your own care if your capital is above the financial threshold.

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)

If you have significant ongoing health needs, you may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC). If you qualify, the NHS can fund your care in full, including care provided in your own home.
  • Health assessment – An initial screening is usually followed by a full assessment by a team of healthcare professionals.
  • Care at home – CHC can cover the full cost of eligible care provided in your own home.
  • Not means-tested – Your income and savings are not taken into account when deciding if you qualify.
CHC is intended for adults with a primary health need. Eligibility is based on your overall care needs, rather than a particular diagnosis or medical condition.

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC)
Attendance Allowance (Age 66+)

Attendance Allowance (Age 66+)

If you’ve reached State Pension age and need help with personal care or supervision because of a disability or health condition, you may be entitled to Attendance Allowance. It is not means-tested, so your income and savings are not normally taken into account.
  • Lower rate: £76.70 per week – if you need help or supervision during the day or at night.
  • Higher rate: £114.60 per week – if you need help or supervision during both the day and night.
  • Help with care costs – Attendance Allowance can help towards the extra costs of needing care and support.
You can qualify even if you don’t currently receive care from a care provider. What matters is the help or supervision you need because of your condition. You generally need to have needed this help for at least 6 months, unless you are nearing the end of life.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) (Ages 16 to State Pension Age)

If you’re aged 16 to State Pension age and have a disability or long-term health condition that affects your daily life or mobility, you may be entitled to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
  • Paid every 4 weeks and not means-tested
  • Two components: Daily Living and Mobility
  • Can help towards the extra costs of living with a disability, including care and support
PIP is based on how your condition affects your everyday life and the support you need, rather than your income or savings.
