Wellbeing First: Practical Tips for a Healthier, Happier You

June 23, 2026

Gabriella Sneider

24th – 30th June is World Wellbeing Week, making it the perfect time to think about how we’re looking after ourselves.

When people hear the word wellbeing, they often think about eating healthier or exercising more. While those things can certainly help, wellbeing is much broader than that. It’s about feeling good physically, mentally and emotionally, and finding ways to enjoy life and stay connected to the people and things that matter most.

The good news is that improving your wellbeing doesn’t have to involve major changes. Small actions can often have the biggest impact.

Here are some simple but effective ways to support your wellbeing.

1. Start Your Day Without Reaching for Your Phone

Many of us check emails, social media or the news within minutes of waking up.

Instead, try spending the first 15 minutes of your day doing something positive, whether that’s enjoying a cup of tea, stretching, listening to music or simply sitting quietly.

Starting your day calmly can help reduce stress and set a more positive tone.

2. Get Outside Every Day

Fresh air and natural light can do wonders for both physical and mental wellbeing.

You don’t need to hike for miles. A short walk around the block, sitting in the garden or visiting a local park can help boost your mood and energy levels.

Even ten minutes outside can make a difference.

3. Stay Connected

A quick phone call, a coffee with a friend or a chat with a neighbour can have a bigger impact than we sometimes realise.

Strong social connections can help reduce loneliness, improve mood and provide valuable support during difficult times.

If you’ve been meaning to reach out to someone, consider this your reminder.

4. Move Your Body in a Way You Enjoy

Exercise doesn’t have to mean joining a gym.

Walking, gardening, dancing in the kitchen, swimming or gentle stretching all count.

The best form of exercise is the one you’ll actually enjoy and stick with.

5. Make Time for Something That Makes You Smile

Think about activities that help you switch off and feel happy.

Reading, baking, crafting, photography, puzzles, music or spending time with pets can all contribute to a greater sense of wellbeing.

Too often, we stop making time for the things we enjoy because life gets busy.

6. Take Regular Breaks

Many people push through the day without stopping.

Try taking short breaks throughout the day to stretch, step outside, make a drink or simply clear your mind.

Giving yourself permission to pause can help improve focus and reduce stress.

7. Practise Gratitude

It may sound simple, but taking a moment to think about what’s going well can shift your perspective.

At the end of each day, try writing down three things you’re grateful for, no matter how small.

A sunny day, a kind conversation or a favourite meal all count.

8. Protect Your Sleep

Sleep affects almost every aspect of our wellbeing.

Creating a relaxing bedtime routine, reducing screen time before bed and keeping a regular sleep schedule can all help improve sleep quality.

A well-rested mind and body are better equipped to handle everyday challenges.

9. Do One Thing for Someone Else

Acts of kindness can benefit both the person receiving them and the person giving them.

It could be helping a neighbour, checking in on a loved one, volunteering your time or simply offering a compliment.

Small gestures can go a long way.

10. Be Kinder to Yourself

Perhaps the most important tip of all.

Many of us speak to ourselves far more harshly than we would speak to a friend.

Nobody gets everything right all the time. Give yourself credit for what you’ve achieved and allow yourself some grace when things don’t go to plan.

Final Thoughts

World Wellbeing Week is a reminder that wellbeing isn’t something we should only think about once a year.

Looking after yourself doesn’t have to be expensive, complicated or time-consuming. Often, it’s the little habits we build into our daily lives that make the biggest difference over time.

This week, why not choose just one of these ideas and give it a try? You might be surprised by the positive impact it has. πŸ’œ
