Summer always feels like the perfect excuse to get out of the house a bit more, enjoy longer evenings, and make the most of everything we’ve got right on our doorstep. If you’re based in Ipswich or nearby, there are actually loads of lovely things to do without having to travel far at all.

Here are a few ideas if you’re looking for inspiration this summer.

🎶 Enjoy local events and live music

Ipswich really comes alive in the summer months with a great mix of live music and community events.

One of the highlights this year is the Summer Soul Vibes Festival, taking place at Venue16 on Saturday 11th July. It’s a full-day festival filled with soul, funk and disco music, a great atmosphere, food stalls, and a really friendly crowd. It’s one of those events that feels like a proper summer day out without needing to travel too far.

Alongside this, Ipswich Music Day and other smaller performances and outdoor events pop up throughout July, so there’s usually something going on most weekends.

🌳 Spend time in the parks

Sometimes the simplest days are the best ones. Christchurch Park is perfect for a walk, picnic, or just sitting in the shade with an ice cream. Holywells Park is another lovely spot, especially if you want something a bit quieter with nice walking routes and green space.

It’s ideal for slow afternoons when you just want a bit of fresh air.

🚤 Visit Ipswich Waterfront

The Waterfront is a lovely place to head to on a sunny day or even in the evening when it’s a bit cooler. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants, and it’s nice just walking along the marina and watching the boats.

It’s one of those places that always feels a bit more relaxed in the summer.

🐑 Family days out nearby

If you want something a bit more structured, there are some great places just outside Ipswich too. Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park is always a popular choice, especially for families. There’s plenty to see and do, and it makes for a full day out without needing to travel too far.

🌊 Head to the Suffolk coast

We’re lucky to have some beautiful seaside towns nearby. Felixstowe is great for a classic beach day, and Southwold is perfect if you want something with colourful beach huts, fish and chips, and a traditional seaside atmosphere.

If you’re visiting Felixstowe, make sure to stop by Beach Street – a vibrant seafront destination built from colourful shipping containers. It’s packed with independent food traders, cafés, bars, and local shops, making it the perfect place to grab lunch, enjoy a coffee, or try something a little different while taking in the sea air. From street food and sweet treats to artisan products and regular events, there’s plenty to explore for all ages.

Even a short walk along the coast, with the sea breeze and views across the shoreline, can leave you feeling refreshed and ready for the rest of summer. 🌞🌊

🚶‍♀️ Enjoy countryside walks

If you prefer something a bit quieter, Suffolk has no shortage of countryside walks. Woodbridge is especially lovely in the summer, with riverside paths, independent shops, and nice places to stop for coffee.

It’s perfect for a slow, relaxed day outdoors.
